$10,000 Signing Bonus for Lateral Officers
Successful Lateral Candidates will be paid $5,000.00 at the time of hire and $5,000.00 after successful completion of the Field Training Program and Probationary Period. To be considered as a Lateral applicant, you must:
- Be currently employed as a Peace Officer in good standing by a California-authorized jurisdiction.
- Have successfully completed your Field Training Program with your current agency.
- Possess or qualify for a California P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate.
- Patrol : 3/12.5 hours shifts with one monthly 10 hour payback shift
- Investigations and Special Assignments: 4/10 hours shifts
Police Officer Pay Progression
The City of La Habra has a step and merit pay plan in place for Police Officers. Step increases are received on anniversary dates contingent upon successful performance. Officers are also eligible for Bilingual Pay after their probationary period and upon successful completion of the City’s Bilingual examination.
Paid Vacation/Vacation Accrual
Earned at the rate of ten (10) working days per year for the first four (4) years of service. Additional vacation may be earned by employees after five (5) years of service.
An average of ten (10) holidays per year, plus one (1) floating holiday for certain bargaining groups.
Accumulated on the basis of ten (10) hours per month.
Several CalPERS health plans are available. The City pays a flat rate portion of the premium according to the bargaining unit agreement.

The City pays a flat rate portion of the premium. The Employee may pay a portion of the insurance premium according to the bargaining unit agreement and this benefit is mandatory.
Public Safety(Sworn employees) hired after January 1, 2013, and who are new to CalPERS, or are returning CalPERS members with a break in service greater than six months, will be enrolled in the 2.7% @ 57 retirement plan formula and will be required to pay 50 percent of the normal CalPERS cost.
Public Safety(Sworn employees hired after January 1, 2013, who are deemed to be existing CalPERS members, will be enrolled in the 2% @ 50 CalPERS benefit formula.
The City offers two (2) plans administered by Empower Retirement and ICMA-RC. This is a voluntary benefit with no City contribution.
Each officer is completely outfitted upon appointment (excluding footwear). Each officer also receives a uniform allowance of $950 annually.
